Motorway Vehicle Platooning on Intersections to increase capacity!

Let's think about such a case: we have two relatively congested motorways - each of which has three lanes and they merge into one 4 lane motorway.

Engineering approach would find a solution with narrowing each of merging motorways into two lanes and two double-lane motorways would become four lane motorway. This solution is rather obvious and straightforward. Also when 3 lanes will be narrowed into 2 lanes congestions are likely.

But let's make the solution slightly more "intelligent".

We have VMS (Variable Massage Signs), so we can more or less control cruise speed.

Let's group vehicles into platoons of say 100 vehicles, rather packed platoons with high flow density -  say (0,1 veh/m), and speed around 70 km/h.

We can adjust speed of the platoon and generate gaps between them. So that instead of evenly congested motorway we realtively really congested platoons and gaps between them. We can control platoons so that when platoon on left link motorway approaches intersection, on right link there's gap. And when platoon comes from right, there's a gap on left link and so on. We do need to narrow motorways, we just manage the traffic !

I think overall flow can be greater than in classic approach!
